the eve of summer.

flowers in the garden.
flowers in the garden.

For me, school doesn’t end for another month.

But that doesn’t stop my mind from wishing it was summer, from seeking out the warm air and the bright sun and the blossoming green leaves. Every sweet flower I smell and bird I hear sing reminds me of the freedom that I grow nearer to with each passing day. Yes, I look forward to being free from school, but it’s so much more than that: it’s the florid breeze and the starry nights and the long rides and the countless stories. It’s the fond memories and the excited anticipation, the prospect that anything- anything- could happen. It’s a feeling that descends upon me as soon as the leaves on the trees begin to bloom and the last blast of cold air gusts through the branches.

And yet, it’s not quite summer at the moment. I’ve still got homework to do, lessons to learn, and final exams to take. However, that feeling lurks within me nevertheless, awaiting the day when it can finally spring forth in a burst of careless energy.

In the meantime, I’ve had the sudden urge to read summery books: stories set on the beach, that take place in the summertime, that are happy and uplifting in general. It’s always summer in these books, even though it may not be summer right now.

Does this feeling overwhelm you guys at this time of year? Do you have any summery book suggestions? Let me know in the comments section below!
