“Every American should be forced to live outside the United States for a year or two. Americans should be forced to see how ridiculous they appear to the rest of the world! They should listen to someone else’s version of themselves–to anyone else’s version! Every country knows more about America than Americans know about themselves! And Americans know absolutely nothing about any other country!”
– A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
As an American, I found this passage to be particularly interesting while I was reading this book. I don’t doubt its truth, but I don’t necessarily believe that it solely applies to Americans. I think everyone experiences times when they are so absorbed in their own lives that they forget to put their head up and look at their surroundings for a bit. This quote is a good reminder that perspective is a valuable tool to have.
