“But you could not have pure love or pure lust nowadays. No emotion was pure, because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred. Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow struck against the Party. It was a political act.” ~ page 126 of 1984 by George Orwell
This was one of the passages that stuck out the most to me while reading this fascinating novel. It really makes it clear how complicated things were in a society ruled by Big Brother. Even love, a seemingly untouchable force in terms of government control, now had political undertones. As I read this everything sort of clicked into place for me, particularly the immense impact that living in this controlled society had on the minds of the people.
