“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” ~ The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
In this quote, Fitzgerald has beautifully captured one of the many reasons why I love summer: its sense of renewal. More so to me than the official New Year on January 1st, the start of summer truly feels like an opportunity to begin again. School is out for the next few months, the sun is shining, and some distance from one’s daily routine offers a chance to reflect and do some growing of your own. I think summer has this particular effect on young people especially, because summer vacation is so important to the cycle of the school year. Summer has been my well-needed break from the busyness of school, and I look forward to it each and every year. The beginning of the summer shimmers with infinite possibilities, and it’s that glimmer of the unknown that is the incredibly rejuvenating.
