“But science cannot help us decide what to do with that world, or how to live. Science can make a nuclear reactor, but it cannot tell us not to build it. Science can make pesticide, but cannot tell us not to use it.” ~ Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
As I said in my review of Jurassic Park, this novel does an amazing job of really making you question whether some scientific advancements really should be pursued. This is precisely why the arts and humanities are still so important in today’s technological world. Scientific advancements are no good if we don’t have the cultural values and standards set by which to utilize them. I would argue that the rise of science and technology has made studying the humanities more important than ever before.

!!!!! I love this quote, and I’m happy to have found someone else who’s read the book! I love BOTH the book and the movie, but the book definitely made me think a lot more.

Yay! I know, it’s hard sometimes to find people who actually read the books that the movies are based on! We’ve got to stick together, haha 🙂

Amazing! I’m going to use that quote and what you’ve said about the humanities being even more important now to pursue something in the humanities field in the future. 😀 Not that I wasn’t going to in the first place, but THIS POST THOUGH. 😀

Awww, thanks so much! 🙂 I’m the same way- this is sort of my train of thought when justifying the humanities to others (not that they need to be justified, but some people just don’t see it). When I read this quote in the book I was literally like OH MY GOODNESS THAT’S IT. THAT’S PERFECT. It was great 🙂
