Top Ten Tuesday: Books that Surprised Me

Happy Tuesday!! This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl) focuses on books that surprised us– for better or worse. Although I think it’s intended to be interpreted as “books that surprised us with how much we ended up liking or disliking them,” I’ve decided to take the topic rather literally. Instead, I’ll be sharing ten books that literally surprised me with their twists, turns, and unexpected plots.

What are some books that have surprised you? What do you think of the books I’ve mentioned? Let me know in the comments section below!

  1. I’ll have to read As I Lay Dying, I tried last year and got stuck because of the difficult prose (English is not my first language) but now you made me curious. The Road was like a punch to the gut!

      1. They did make a made for TV movie with the plot of the novel, but it wasn’t very good! The film was probably better done artistically even though it wasn’t at all faithful.

  2. I did really enjoy We Were Liars and The Great Gatsby, and I agree the plot twists were quite unexpected! Illuminae and More Than This are on my TBR, I really must get round to reading them soon! Great list!

  3. “The Road” stamped on my soul and ruined all possibilities of recovery. such a sad and beautifully written story, the emotional intensity??????? I had to read it for school or I probably never would have picked it up, but so glad i did ❤ also Cormac is a nice name 😀

    1. That’s definitely an accurate description of The Road! I was NOT ready for how intense it got…. especially at the end! Also, I agree: I really like the name Cormac, too ❤

      1. I was quite glad it was short, partly because I wasn’t enjoying the writing style, but I can see why some people would be disappointed. Such a twist though!

  4. I’ve read a few off here and now that you mention it The Shining and Animal Farm were huge surprises. The ending of Animal Farm is in fact brilliant and jaw dropping. The Shining – I think because I’d seen the film beforehand I expected that it would be the same – I never realised that the film strayed so much in the adaptation process. As it is, and even though I loved the film, I think the book was so much better.

    1. I felt the same way about the novel/film of the Shining! I watched the movie first and then read the book and I was really surprised by how much they differed from each other. I actually think I liked the film better… I’m such a bad bookworm 🙂

  5. Illuminae surprised me as well… I didn’t expect to like it that much haha, but I really did. And YES to More than this, I did NOT see that ending coming at all haha 🙂 Fantastic choices, Holly 🙂 x

  6. Illuminae definitely surprised me too, especially because I wasn’t expecting to like it and was just checking out what the hype was about… but then I ended up loving it (and really need to continue the series now that Obsidio is out).

  7. I wouldn’t describe Animal Farm as surprising, cause it just seemed true. I find most mysteries surprising, but they’re kind of supposed to be. And Then There Were None broke a rule, making it more surprising.

  8. The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult is definitely my #1 plot twist book, it blew my mind! The Shining has been sitting on my shelf for longer than I care to admit… maybe it will be my next one!
