thoughts of a nut allergic book lover

#stayhomereadingrush TBR

I adore the Reading Rush. I participate in this week-long readathon every summer and it’s so much fun to be part of such a large online community of bookworms all reading at the same time. Fortunately, the Reading Rush folks have decided to set up another readathon while so many of us are social-distancing at home. The #stayhomereadingrush starts tomorrow April 16th and ends April 19th–a quick little reading sprint to get everyone in the bookish mood! Check out their website for more information.

Since I’m still currently in the midst of a law school semester (less than two weeks of classes left to go!) I know that I won’t be able to read as much as I would like to during this readathon. However, I’m still hoping to get to at least one or two of these books. I might end up combining some challenges in one or two books so I can cover them all, but we’ll see. For now, I’m going to give myself four book options, one for each challenge:

Read a book with a house on the cover.

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. Since I don’t currently own a physical book with a house on the cover, I’ve decided that this will be my audiobook pick for the readathon. I’ve actually never read anything by Ann Patchett before, but I’ve heard fantastic things about her books. (And yes, I am indeed counting the word “house” at a house on the cover of this book. Sneaky? Perhaps. Effective? Absolutely.)

Read a book in the same room the whole time.

As You Like It by William Shakespeare. I’m not usually a big Shakespeare fan, but this play holds a special place in my heart because I saw it performed at The Globe in London when I studied abroad. I have such vivid fond memories of that performance as I believe it was my last time in London that year. Ever since then I’ve been meaning to read it, so hopefully I finally will during this readathon.

Read a book set somewhere you wish you could go.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. A magical world of adventures and books and pirates?? Seems like a much more interesting place than the bedroom I’m currently working out of! I’ve been excited to read this book for AGES and absolutely loved The Night Circus. Unfortunately I’ve heard some mixed reviews of this novel, but I’m going to do my best to go in with an open mind and reasonable expectations.

Read a book that will make you smile.

The Falconers by Dana Czapnik.  One of my friends gave me this novel for my birthday and I’ve been so looking forward to reading it. I love getting books as gifts, especially when it’s something that the other person really enjoyed. I’m just so excited to read this and discuss it with her. No matter how I actually end up feeling about this book, I know that it’s connection with my friend will absolutely make me smile!

I’m so excited for this mini version of the Reading Rush!

Let me know: Are you participating? What’s on your TBR? Have you read any of these books? Which one should I start with?

Yours,

HOLLY

  1. I hope you have a great time!
I will participate, but I haven’t really made a TBR, I just have some shorter books/graphic novels that I would like to get too! I guess I should check if they have a house on the cover haha!

  5. I was going to add the Ninth House to my TBR even though it doesn’t have a house of the cover. But I mean… the word is there. It must count, I’m sure! 😀

    1. Haha definitely!! The word “house” is technically “house on the cover,” right?! 🙂

  7. In some ways I actually liked The Starless Sea more than The Night Circus. I can see where someone might not like it. It’s dense. It’s not an easy read and it has multiple layers. But that’s exactly why I loved it. It felt like it was several books in one!

I enjoyed The Dutch House but I think several reviews that I’d read set my expectations for it a bit too high. That and the fact that I’m a big Ann Patchett fan, and so my expectations were already generally high! I liked it, but I didn’t LOVE it.

I always think that approaching Shakespeare for the first time as something to be read is a mistake. It was written to be performed and viewed. So hopefully having that production of As You Like It in your memory will help you appreciate it as literature too.

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed The Starless Sea so much. And I completely agree–I haven’t much enjoyed the Shakespeare plays that I’ve just been assigned to read straight from the page in classes in the past, so I’m hoping that reading something I’ve already seen performed live goes a bit better!

      1. I think teachers who do that do their students and the plays a disservice.

  10. I loved The Dutch House, and the audiobook, read by Tom Hanks, is fantastic. He brings so much to the reading, I can’t imagine the book any other way.

[…] Holly @ Nut Free Nerd shared a post about the #stayhomereadingrush challenge starting today from April 16th-19th, and after reading her post, I was surprised I’d never heard of The Reading Rush. But after checking out the website, I realized that’s because it started as BookTubeAThon–which I have heard of–but not being a BookTuber, I’d never paid too much attention to it. Now I have loads of time, though, so I’m going to attempt to participate, hopefully knocking off a few books from my backlist while also managing to encourage my climb up out of my reading slump.
