The Hunger Games by Suzanne CollinsWhat are you currently reading???

Right now I’m reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins for my Introduction to Literature class (this will be a common theme in this post!). I read this book years ago and haven’t picked it up since, so I’m looking forward to giving it another go and reading it more closely. My professor always helps us see so much more in literature than what we notice at a first glance, and I have no doubt that I’ll view this series much differently after our class discusses it!

Galileo by Bertolt BrechtWhat did you recently finish reading???

The last thing I read was a play called Galileo by Bertolt Brecht, which I had to read for my Introduction to Literature class. I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would, mostly because of the historical significance behind it. Even though the play itself is about the actual philosopher Galileo who lived during the Renaissance, it explores the conflict between science and religion in a way that can connect with the controversy surrounding the atomic bomb during World War II. Both entertaining and thought-provoking, Galileo is a play I would love to see performed on stage.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle coverWhat do you think you’ll read next???

Since The Hunger Games is the last book I have to read for my Introduction to Literature class, the next book I read will finally be one that I choose to read on my own! I’m not entirely sure what I’ll dive into next, but I really want to get around to reading more Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and perhaps even something Christmas-related. If you have any suggestions for books relating to the holiday season, they would be greatly appreciated!

I haven’t done one of these posts in a while, but I felt like a quick update on what I’ve been reading lately would be good since things have been kind of quiet on this blog recently.

Don't Know Much About HistoryWhat are you currently reading???

Right now I’m reading Don’t Know Much About History by Kenneth C. Davis. I LOVE learning about United States history, and I’m really enjoying this book so far. It’s basically gives a brief summary of all the major events in American history, and although it’s a little slow going it’s nevertheless a fascinating read.

I’m also still reading Harry Potter y la cámara secreta by J.K. Rowling (the Spanish translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

Neverwhere by Neil GaimanWhat did you recently finish reading???

A few days ago I finished listened to the audio book of Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I absolutely love the way Neil Gaiman narrates his own stories, so that in itself was awesome! The book was great as well- his novels are always charmingly bizarre, and this was no exception! I really enjoy reading it, and I’ll be posting a full review soon!

Harry Potter y la camara secretaWhat do you think you’ll read next???

Perhaps something in Spanish, since I haven’t read anything translated yet this summer. I really have to finish the Harry Potter one, because I’ve been in the middle of reading it for AGES. I’m about half way through it, so I just need to sit down and finish the rest!

jane eyre coverWhat are you currently reading???

Right now I’m in the middle of reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I’ve been wanting to read this book for the longest time, and since I included it in my Summer 2015 TBR I thought that this would be the perfect time to finally pick it up. (Side note: isn’t that cover absolutely GORGEOUS??? I love the Penguin English Library editions!

I’m also still reading Harry Potter y la cámara secreta by J.K. Rowling (the Spanish translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

WThe Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larssonhat did you recently finish reading???

Last week I finished reading The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson, which is the sequel to The Girl with the Dragon TattooI really enjoyed the first one, but I think that this second installment in the trilogy is just as good, if not better! This is such a suspenseful, un-put-down-able (yup, I just made a word) read! I can’t wait to read the third and final book!

I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy NelsonWhat do you think you’ll read next???

As you read this I will be riding in a car with my family as we make the thirteen hour drive down to West Virginia for a soccer tournament. Within the past few years I’ve noticed that I get car sick much more easily from reading, so I think I’m going to opt for an audio book next. I’m not sure which one I’ll end up reading, but I’m thinking either something by Neil Gaiman (I love how he narrates many of his audiobooks!) or I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson.

The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg LarssonWhat are you currently reading???

Right now I’m reading The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson, which is the second book in the Millennium series. A copy of this book has been sitting on my shelf for a few years now ever since I bought it at a used bookstore a while back. I really liked the first book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and I’m eager to see how this one is in comparison. So far it’s a really captivating and difficult to put down, despite its long length (over 700 pages!). I’m hoping to finish it within the next week and a half or so, but we’ll see how that goes!

I’m also still reading Harry Potter y la cámara secreta by J.K. Rowling (the Spanish translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

What did you recently finish reading???Wonder Spanish Translation cover

A few days ago I finished reading the Spanish translation of Wonder by R.J. Palacio. I have never read this book in the original English, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. This is such a meaningful, heart-warming, and eye-opening read, and I think that more schools should teach it in elementary or middle school. It contains such a powerful and important lesson about accepting people the way they are. Definitely a worthwhile and enjoyable read!

The Emancipation of a Buried Man by Eddy GilmoreI was also lucky enough to receive a copy of Eddy Gilmore’s memoir The Emancipation of a Buried Man in exchange for an honest review. This book is one of the most honest books I have ever read- you can immediately tell that the author’s voice is authentic and that he’s not holding back or exaggerating. Although he endured an unpleasant childhood, Gilmore has created an inspiring life for himself filled with love, happiness, and a sense of fulfillment. His enthusiasm for life is evident in every word of this memoir, making it an incredibly touching story.

jane eyre coverWhat do you think you’ll read next???

There are a bunch of books in my physical TBR pile that I’m excited to read, but one of the ones I’m most eager to get to is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I’ve heard so many great things about this from my friends in AP English class, and I know they have excellent taste of literature so I’m hoping this won’t disappoint!

WhatSapient cover are you currently reading???

Right now I’m a little ways into Sapient by Jerry Kaczmarowski, which I received a copy of in exchange for an honest review. It’s a science fiction novel about animals who become more intelligent due to testing. I’ve never read anything like it before, so I’m really excited to get further into it!

Wonder Spanish Translation cover

To improve my Spanish skills, I’m currently reading the Spanish translation of Wonder by R.J. Palacio. I’m trying to read it without looking up a lot of words so I can see how much I really understand, and so far it’s going really well.

I’m also still reading Harry Potter y la cámara secreta by J.K. Rowling (the Spanish translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

Fat Girl Walking coverWhat did you recently finish reading???

At the end of last week I finished reading Fat Girl Walking by Brittany Gibbons, which I received a a copy of in exchange for an honest review. I thought this was a fantastic memoir for numerous reasons, especially because of the writing style and the important topic it discusses. This is a book about dieting or wanting to change everything about yourself- rather, it emphasizes that we should love ourselves no matter the size clothing we wear.

Ugly People Beautiful HeartsOver the weekend I read Ugly People Beautiful Hearts by Marlen Komar, which I also got a copy of in exchange for an honest review. This short book of poetry about the many sides of love is emotional, stirring, and beautifully written.

Reviews will be posted in the coming weeks!

The Lost World by Michael Crichton coverWhat do you think you’ll read next???

Since the movie Jurassic World is being released this summer, I really want to continue on with the books. I recently read Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton and LOVED it, so next on my list is the sequel, titled The Lost World. I can’t wait to get back into this dinosaur-filled world!

What are you currently reading???

Fat Girl Walking coverRight now I’m reading Fat Girl Walking by Brittany Gibbons, which I was recently sent for review. I think the message of this memoir is so important that I decided to join the promotional campaign for it. My review of this book will be posted on June 8th, including an exciting giveaway! What I’ve read of it so far is great, and I’m really excited to read more of it.

King Lear by ShakespeareWith my AP English class I’m still reading King Lear by William Shakespeare. We’ve had to take a break from reading it in order to prepare for AP exams, but hopefully we’ll be able to get back to it soon now that our exam is done!

I’m also still reading Harry Potter y la cámara secreta by J.K. Rowling (the Spanish translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold by Iain ReadingWhat did you recently finish reading???

At the very beginning of this month I finished reading a copy of Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold by Iain Reading, which was sent to me for review. I did have a few problems with it, but don’t worry- a review will be coming soon!

A few days ago I finished reading Jurassic Park by Michael Jurassic Park by Michael CrichtonCrichton and OH MY GOODNESS THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC. I wanted to read it before the new movie (with Chris Pratt!) comes out in June, but I never expected to love it as much as I did. It was incredibly gripping and suspenseful, not to mention fascinating with all of its talk of genetic engineering and chaos theory. I can’t wait to read the sequel!

Sapient coverWhat do you think you’ll read next???

As always, there are so many exciting books on my TBR that I can’t wait to read! I think I’ll probably pick up Sapient by Jerry Kaczmarowski, which I was recently sent for review. It’s about animal testing that leads to increased animal intelligence (featuring a rat named Einstein) and I’m incredibly intrigued!

Xenocide by Orson Scott CardWhat are you currently reading???

I’m still reading Xenocide by Orson Scott Card, the third book in the Ender Quintet. I would love to just sit down and finally finish it all in one sitting, but I’m so busy that I’ve only been able to read about thirty pages at a time before going to bed each night. The story is really starting to pick up, so I hope I’m able to do a lot of reading soon!

King Lear by ShakespeareWith my AP English class I’m also still reading King Lear by William Shakespeare. It’s my goal this year to read more plays, especially Shakespeare. The only Shakespeare I’ve read beside this play is Othello and Romeo and Juliet, both of which I didn’t really care for. But I’m willing to give Shakespeare another chance!

I’m also still reading Harry Potter y la cámara secreta by J.K. Rowling (the Spanish translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

What did you recently finish reading???

Unfortunately, nothing.

I’ve been so busy with school lately that I haven’t had the time to sit down a get a huge chunk of reading done. Fortunately, I have next week off from school for April break, so hopefully I’ll be able to read a lot then!

Her Campus College Guide coverWhat do you think you’ll read next???

Since I’m part of the Her Campus Blogger Network, I was kindly sent a review copy of the recently published Her Campus Guide to College Life. I’ll be going to college for the first time in the fall, so I’m looking forward to reading this and see what advice I can bring with me to school in autumn! Thanks for the review copy, Her Campus!

Xenocide by Orson Scott CardWhat are you currently reading???

At the very beginning of this month I started reading Xenocide by Orson Scott Card. This is the third book in the Ender Quintet and it is incredible. The futuristic world in this series is so complex yet fairly easy to understand, and it deals with issues that are really interesting to think about. If you like aliens, time travel, or science fiction in general then you should definitely give this series a try!

King Lear by ShakespeareWith my AP English class I also started reading King Lear by William Shakespeare. I haven’t read much Shakespeare (just Othello and Romeo and Juliet) but I think I’ll like this play more than the others. It seems like it will have a more meaningful lesson to it, or maybe that’s just because I have such a great English teacher. We’ll see!

I’m also still reading Harry Potter y la cámara secreta by J.K. Rowling (the Spanish translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

What did you recently finish reading???A Darker Shade final for Irene

I finally got off the holds list for A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab! I read a preview of it from NetGalley (click here to read my review!) but then to read the rest of it I had to put myself on hold for it. It was definitely worth the wait! This is the first book that I’ve read by V.E. Schwab, but I can already tell that it won’t be the last. I can’t wait to write a review of it!

Travelling to Infinity by Jane HawkingWhat do you think you’ll read next???

I recently watched The Theory of Everything, and that got me interested in reading Jane Hawking’s memoir Traveling to Infinity. This couple’s tragic and inspiring story has always fascinated me, but seeing it in the form of a movie has made me want to find out even more about it. This memoir has great reviews, so hopefully it’ll be good!

Live Your Dash by Linda EllisWhat are you currently reading???

Right now I’m reading Live Your Dash by Linda Ellis, which I received for winning an award in school about a year ago. The idea behind this book is very inspiring and thought-provoking, and I can’t help but feel good whenever I read it.

I’m also still reading Harry Potter y la cámara secreta by J.K. Rowling (the Spanish translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

What did you recently finish reading???Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller

With my AP English class I read the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, and I have to say that it is the best play I have ever read! It was meaningful and suspenseful in ways that I never expected, especially because I don’t usually enjoy reading plays all that much. My English teacher definitely knows how to pick the best books!

GilgameshAlso, I randomly decided to read Gilgamesh: A Verse Narrative by Herbert Mason one day and I really enjoyed it! I didn’t know anything about it when I first started reading it, but there was some helpful information in the back of the book that made understanding the characters and historical context of the story much easier. I wasn’t sure if I would like it or not, but after reading it I definitely think it’s a great story that more people should read.

A few days ago I finished reading an ARC copy of shadow scale coverShadow Scale by Rachel Hartman, which I received from NetGalley. This is the sequel to Seraphina, which I read a few years ago and absolutely adored. Although this book wasn’t quite as good as the first one, it was still a great read. I kind of want to go back and reread Seraphina now, too!

Reviews of these books will be posted soon!

Right now I’m reading an ARC copy of Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman, which I received from NetGalley. This is the sequel to Seraphina, which was such a fantastic novel. I’m only a little bit into this book, but I can already tell that it’s going to be great!

I’m also still reading Harry Potter y la cámara secreta by J.K. Rowling (the Spanish translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall coverWhat did you recently finish reading???

Since the beginning of the month I have finished A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall. Although it was really cute and I did enjoy reading it, I felt as though it just amounted to your average YA contemporary romance novel. I was expecting the unique writing (it’s written from 14 different perspectives, and none of them are of the main characters!) to make it stand out more, but I found that it actually created a few more issues that made me like it less. Still, it was a great read!

Next, I finished an ARC preview of A Darker Shader of Magic by V.E. Schwab that I had received from NetGalley a little while ago. Since it was a preview it was only the first 100 pages or so of the full book, but I loved it nevertheless. I can’t wait to read the entire novel!!

Reviews of these books will be posted in the near future, so stay tuned!
