The Cramm Award

Today I bring to you something I had never heard of until recently: the Cramm Award. Thanks so much to Zoie @ Whisked Away By Words for nominating me! Let’s get straight to it, shall we?

  • Include a tidbit about who created this award (theCramm)
  • Mention the person who nominated you
  • Share three things that motivate you to blog
  • Share three people who inspire you to blog
  • Share one thing you hope to do that will improve the world
  • Answer your challenge question
  • Nominate 10+ bloggers and give them a fun challenge question

+ Keeping a record of my bookish thoughts. This was my original reason for starting a blog years ago–I wanted to keep a record of what I thought about specific books so I could go back and compare later on. Although I post more than solely book reviews nowadays, this is still an important motivation for me.

Writing practice. Writing is something that I love to do, meaning that I’m always looking to improve. Blogging helps me keep my typing fingers at the ready, especially during the summer months when I wouldn’t ordinarily be writing much without classes.

+ The blogging community. By far the most important motivation for me nowadays is the blogging community. I love discussing things in the comments section with you all as well as keeping up to date with what’s going on in your bookish lives.

+ Marie @ Drizzle & Hurricane Books. Marie has always been one of my greatest blogging inspirations. Not only does she always post such thought-provoking discussions, but she’s also incredibly active in the comments sections of other blogs. I aspire to be as kind, thoughtful, and active in the blogging community as Marie!

+ Bridget @ Bridget & Books. This blog is definitely my aesthetic inspiration. I absolutely adore the design of Bridget’s blog, from her beautiful photos to the insightful structure of her book reviews.

+ Shanti & Shar @ Virtually Read. These lovely bookworms are some of my oldest blogging pals and I aspire to be as wonderful as they are. Their comments always brighten my day, as do their creative, thoughtful posts.

One thing I hope to do that will improve the world? That’s a tall order! I suppose I’d just like to be as supportive of people as I can. A teacher once told me that brightening our own corner of the world in turn brightens the entire world–I’d like to believe that this is at least a bit true!

If your life’s story was magically kept in a detailed journal, would you rather 1) be able to read about your past at any time to reflect on your life, or 2) have the ability to write in the blank pages of your future to control what will happen? You can only choose one option!

I would definitely choose the first option–the mere thought of being able to control my future stresses me out already!

  • YOU!

Thanks again to Zoie for nominating me! What are your answers to these questions? What do you think of mine? Let me know in the comments section below!

One Lovely Blog Award | 4

Waking up to see that I’ve been nominated for things like the One Lovely Blogger Award always brings a smile to my face. Thanks so much to Stephen @ Stephen Writes and Emma @ A Dreamer’s Library for nominating me!!

  • Thank the person who nominated you for the award;
  • Share seven facts about yourself;
  • Nominate 15 other bloggers and inform them.

Does being nominated twice mean I have to share fourteen facts about myself instead of just seven? If you insist…

1. I’m a morning person. Not only do I enjoy mornings the most out of all the times of the day, but I also tend to automatically wake up early (relative early, of course–around 7:30am).

2. Jurassic Park is my favorite movie. I even dressed up as Laura Dern in Jurassic Park for a bop that was movie themed. Dedication.

3. I’m a pretty terrible cook. Why make actual meals for myself when I can just eat variations of breakfast (a.k.a. eggs, toast, and oatmeal) for every meal?

4. I like to bake. However, baking is different. What’s not to love about sweet treats at the end? I also feel like mistakes are less noticeable while baking than while cooking actual meals (chocolate hides pretty much everything).

5. I can touch my nose with my tongue. When I was younger I assumed that everyone could do this, but apparently that isn’t the case. Now I use it as my go-to fun fact during awkward ice-breakers at orientations, group meetings, etc.

6. I have no idea what Hogwarts House I should be in. This became an actual dilemma when I visited the Platform 9 3/4 sign at King’s Cross Station in London and the Official Scarf Waver asked me what House I’m in. I ended up saying Gryffindor because I thought the maroon scarf would stand out more in the photo AND because I just couldn’t decide in that short moment. WHAT AM I.

7. I’m allergic to MANY things, not just nuts. Dogs, Cats, birch pollen, ragweed, grass… the list goes on and on!

8. My favorite food is pizza. I could eat pizza every night for a week (or two! or three!) and still not complain. I am ALWAYS in the mood for pizza.

9. I rarely watch Netflix during terms/semesters. Some people turn to Netflix when they want to wind down after a long day of working in the library, but for some reason I usually don’t watch Netflix during term time unless I’m watching it with friends. Maybe this explains why I’m always so behind on shows?

10. I love listening to music while I work. Some people prefer silence when they read or write, but I’d rather have at least some background noise while I’m working.

11. I have a bookstagram. If you’ve followed this blog for a while I feel like you probably already know this already, but I thought I would throw it out there just in case. It’s so much fun!

12. I am an avid list maker. Almost every day the last thing I do before heading to bed is make a to-do list for the next day. Even if I don’t check off everything on the list it’s still nice to wake up with a clear direction for the day. (Besides, what’s more satisfying than checking off tiny boxes?)

13. If I’m not drinking tea, I’m usually drinking hot water. Drinking plain hot water in a mug is something that people are either 100% on board with or think is the strangest thing they’ve ever witnessed. I love it.

14. I love mugs. Speaking of mugs, I adore them. I have far too many for one human being. But when will I stop acquiring new ones? (Never.)

Thanks again to Stephen and Emma for nominating me! ❤

One Lovely Blog Award | 2

Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you’re all having a lovely November day (can you tell that this is my favorite month of the year?). Today I’m excited to share the One Lovely Blog Award. Thanks so much to Fran Laniado for nominating me!!

  1. Each nominee must THANK the person who nominated them and link their blog in the post.
  2. They must include the rules and add the blog award badge as an image.
  3. Must add 7 facts about themselves and then nominate 15 people.

  1. I’m currently studying abroad for a year at Mansfield College at Oxford University.
  2. Jaffa cakes are my new favorite snack. You can only get them here (or in specialty stores in the States) so I’m going to have to stock up before I go back home!
  3. I start listening to Christmas music ridiculously early every year (it’s fair game as long as Halloween is over!).
  4. I LOVE taking polaroid photos.
  5. I saw Rent (the movie based on the musical) for the first time a few weeks ago and have been listening to the soundtrack while writing essays ever since.
  6. I refuse to get a bike here even though it’s clearly the easiest and quickest way to get around. Cycling alongside all of those cars and big buses looks so terrifying!
  7. I miss tap dancing at my college back in the States immensely. I brought my shoes to England, but sadly there isn’t a tap dancing group here.

  1. Sarah @ Written Word Worlds
  2. RAIN @ The Withering
  3. Carly @ The Hungry Little Bookworm
  4. Anatomy of a Book Thief
  5. Lucinda @ Lucinda is reading…
  6. Alice @ Ink Fingerprints

Unique Blogger Award

Sometimes little surprises can completely make your day. Every time I’m tagged or nominated in posts like this Unique Blogger Award it reminds me of the loveliness of the bookish blogging community. Thanks so much to Jenna @ Bookmark Your Thoughts for nominating me!!

  • Share the link of the blogger who has shown love to you by nominating you.
  • Answer the questions.
  • In the spirit of sharing love and solidarity with our blogging family, nominate 8-13 people for the same award.
  • Ask them three questions.

What is your favorite Disney film and character (they don’t have to be from the same thing)? Why?

I have so many Disney favorites, but my most recent one is Rapunzel and Tangled in general. I love the songs, the humor, the story, THE LANTERNS– everything!

How do you handle your TBR list when it gets out of control?

Usually by piling more books on top of it *hides in shame.* In actuality, when I notice that my TBR is getting a little out of control (on my Goodreads shelf, for instance) I’ll go through it and weed out books that I’m not really interested in readying anymore. Sometimes I don’t even remember why I added a book to my TBR in the first place!

What is your favorite type of post to blog about?

I love writing fun discussion posts for several reasons: a) they’re a blast to write, b) they spark awesome conversations in the comments section, and c) they help me look at other perspectives on a topic and see arguments from different angles.

  1. Do you have a favorite book genre?
  2. How do you feel about what is considered to be “classic” literature?
  3. What has been your favorite experience blogging so far?

Thanks again to Jenna for nominating me! What are your answers to these questions? What do you think of mine? Let me know in the comments section below!

Sunshine Blogger Award | 3

Hello, hello! I know I’ve been posting a lot of awards and tags lately, but they’re so fun that I can’t help myself. Thanks so much to Beth @ Reading Every Night for nominating me in this Sunshine Blog Award!!

  1. Would you rather witness the beginning of the earth or the ending of the earth and why?

I would probably prefer to see the beginning of the earth because it sounds like it would be a lot more hopeful than seeing the ending. (Besides, there would be more chances of eventually seeing dinosaurs!)

  2. Why did you call your blog what you did?

I’m severely allergic to nuts and a proud nerd; hence, the blog name Nut Free Nerd was born.

  3. What social cause do you feel the strongest about (e.g. LGBTQ+ rights, animal rights, etc.)?

For the past two summers I have worked at a local Child Advocacy Center where they conduct forensic interviews of children who have allegedly been abused. Because of this work I’m constantly reminded of the severity of the child abuse problem and how our society likes to brush it under the rug because it’s difficult to talk about. Fortunately, organizations like Child Advocacy Centers are working to spread awareness about this important issue.

  4. Give five amazing bloggers a shout-out, share the love.

I’d love to give a shout-out to Emma @ Emma the Book Lover, Marie @ Drizzle & Hurricane Books, Sydney @ Sydney’s Shelves, Shar & Shanti @ Virtually Read, and May @ Forever and Everly. These bloggers are so lovely and always leave the most thoughtful comments on posts. Definitely check out their blogs if you haven’t already! ❤

  5. Post a picture of a beautiful book cover.

I absolutely love the simple cover design of Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. It suits the raw honesty of the poetry and lets the words speak for themselves.

  6. Pick your two favorite characters of all time. Now sacrifice one! (The universe is at stake)

Oh, this is so difficult! The first two that come to mind are Jane from Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Matilda from Roald Dahl’s Matilda. (The fact that they both are named in the titles was completely unplanned!) Matilda is a new favorite of mine because I just read this children’s classic for the first time recently. Both of these characters are strong, intelligent, witty, independent females who I admire greatly. If I absolutely had to sacrifice one it would probably be Jane because the thought of sacrificing little Matilda is just too horrible to endure.

  7. If the apocalypse was coming and you had to evacuate Earth, what are three things you would take with you (both bookish and non-bookish items accepted)?

A book for when I need to escape, a notebook and pencil (those count as one item, right?!) to record my thoughts and ideas, and a photo album to remember those that I love.

  8. What would you do if you won the lottery?

Pay off my college loans, pay off all of my parents loans and bills, go traveling, and donate to a bunch of charities (and my local library!).

  9. Share one of your favorite quotes!

I discovered one of my absolute favorite quotes years ago while reading John Green’s debut novel Looking for Alaska. In it he quotes Francois Rabelais, who once said: “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.” I love how this quote can be interpreted in so many different ways. I think we all have our own unique “Great Perhaps” that we’re trying to find, and this quote is a reminder to keep your ultimate goal in the back of your mind when you need inspiration or motivation.

  10. Tell us about the last book you read; what did you love/hate about it?

The last book I read was Big Woods by William Faulkner, which I really enjoyed. I love how all of the stories are interconnected through characters, themes, and settings. There really wasn’t anything I disliked about it, besides the fact that his writing can be confusing at times.

  11. Share one song that you feel would be a perfect fit for your favourite book character.

Jay Gatsby isn’t my favorite book character, but I can’t help but pair him with Lorde’s song “Green Light.” (Is this cliché? Yes. Do I regret it? NOPE.)

Sunshine Blogger Award | 2

Happy Friday!! I hope you’re all having a fantastic day. Today I’m going to veer off from my usual bookish path to answer some fun questions for the Sunshine Blogger Award. Thanks so much to Loraine @ Wholesome Valour for nominating me!!

If you were to pick a cooking spice to describe your personality, what would you choose and why?

Hmm…. I think I’m going to go with nutmeg. Cinnamon and pepper are too bold, but nutmeg seems just right.

What song would you pick as the soundtrack to your life?

Little Slice by Watsky because it’s upbeat, makes me want to dance, and always reminds me of summer.

What is your Myer’s-Briggs personality type?

ISFJ. However, my middle two letters are pretty close to the center on the chart the test gives you, which means that my S could shift to an N and my F could switch to a T. According to this website, being an ISFJ makes me a “Defender.” I guess this sounds accurate???

What is one thing you like others to know about you?

The first thing I usually tell people is that I’m allergic to nuts… maybe a little boring, but definitely practical!

What is the best advice you have ever received? How did it help you?

TRY YOUR BEST. This is pretty cliché but so true. If you try your best than you really can’t regret not working hard enough or not giving it your all.

Do you think that we are bodies or do you that think we have bodies?

Hmmm…. this is tough! I’m going to say that we have bodies because I think it’s easier to think about the mind and body being separate… if that makes any sense?

When do you feel most confident?

When I’m wearing an outfit that I really love, or even just awesome shoes (a good pair of shoes can work wonders).

How old are you? Do you think your actual age is an accurate representation of your mental / emotional / spiritual age?

People have always told me that I’m an “old soul,” so I guess that means I’m older inside than outside? Interesting…

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

Decide to go study abroad for a year when I have never left the country before. (Eeeek!!!)

Where do you like to escape to when life becomes chaotic?

Between the pages of a book.

What is something you are looking forward to in the coming weeks?

My brother’s high school graduation, hopefully meeting up with some friends from college, and READING!

This was definitely a strange (but fun!) post. Thanks again to Loraine for tagging me!

What are your answers to these questions? Most importantly, what spice would you be? (I think that’s such a cool question!) Let me know in the comments section below!

Since it’s officially autumn,  I’ve decided to make my seven facts fall-themed.

  1. Autumn is my favorite season. I adore all things relating to pumpkin spice, jumping in leaf piles, wearing cozy sweaters, and drinking excessive amounts of tea.
  2. During the chillier seasons (autumn and winter) I usually drink around two or three mugs of tea each day. Is this healthy? I have no idea. Will I continue to drink this much tea? Absolutely!
  3. 124862When I think of autumn, the first book that always come to mind is October Sky by Homer Hickam, a memoir that was later turned into a film starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Don’t worry, it’s more than just the autumnal title– there’s something about the overall setting and atmosphere of this book that exudes fall to me. Whatever the reason is, I highly recommend both this book and the film!
  4. For me, fall is also a season of candles. It seems as though I’ve inherited my mom’s love of cozy scents, because I always get the urge to light candles as soon as the leaves start taking on their golden array of colors. Apple, pumpkin, and baking scents in general are the best!
  5. I’m terrible at carving pumpkins, but I love eating roasted pumpkins seeds. Oh, the conundrum!
  6. The last time I tried to go apple picking I was informed that this particular orchard only allowed people to go picking on the weekends. Needless to say, I was incredibly disappointed.
  7. I love the smell of air in autumn, the way the leaves infuse it with their earthy scent and the crisp snap of fall makes it just chilly enough for a cardigan. There’s nothing better!

  • Nominate eleven blogs to receive the award and write them eleven new questions.
  • List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or your blog.

Suspense-9

William Shakespeare
Good ol’ Shakespeare.

1. What city/country would you like to travel to next?

Fun fact: I’ve never traveled outside of the United States. I don’t even have a passport! However, I’m hoping to study abroad during my junior year of college in either England or Spain.

208940842. What book(s) are currently on your nightstand?

Right now the only book on my nightstand is the one I’m currently reading: A Little History of Literature by John Sutherland. So far I’m absolutely loving it. It’s every literature lover’s dream!

3. What do you find most rewarding about blogging?

For me, the most rewarding part of blogging is definitely talking with and getting to know others in this lovely bookish community. Whether it’s through blog comments, Twitter, or even email, I truly enjoy chatting with all of you!

4. Any advice to new bloggers?

I’m certainly not a blogging expert by any stretch of the imagination, so I would love to know your answers to this question as well. At any rate, my blogging advice is simple: do it because you love it. Otherwise, it’s easy for blogging to feel like a chore at times. If you love it, though, then blogging becomes that much better!

5. What is the craziest/wildest/most adventurous trip or journey you’ve taken?

I’m not the most adventurous person in the world, so I don’t have many wild stories to share. The most adventurous trips I’ve taken are probably the many hiking trips I’ve been on over the years. One time I camped in Baxter State Park in Maine and hiked a few mountains around there, and to this day it is one of my favorite places I’ve ever been. It’s absolutely gorgeous!

IMG_0979
This train is accurately called the Knife’s Edge.

6. Three songs you always have on your travel playlist?

Whenever I go on long road trips with my family, I inevitably end up listening to these three songs at some point: Ribs by Lorde, Anna Sun by Walk the Moon, and Hopeless Wanderer by Mumford & Sons.

June-11

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater7. What is one book you are secretly embarrassed you haven’t read yet?

I wouldn’t say that I’m necessarily embarrassed to not have read certain books, but there are definitely many that I need to read as soon as possible. A few that come to mind are The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. (But seriously, there are SO MANY MORE that I could list!)

8. Do you have or want any pets?

DO I. Currently I have three days, which is the most my family has ever had at one time> Melody is a mutt who we adopted when I was in kindergarten, Abby is a miniature dachshund who is very nervous, and Eddie is a friendly chug (a chihuahua pug mix!) who we adopted this past April. Needless to say, my house is pretty crowded with furry friends!

IMG_3335
Eddie and I!

9. What are your favorite types of blog posts to write?

Even though I never manage to keep up with creating them, I think my favorite posts to write are book reviews. They take a while to finish but I feel so accomplished when I do. Also, I love seeing the response they get and learning about whether or not others had similar thoughts on that particular work. Book reviews are very rewarding posts (both personally and in terms of community engagement), which is why I love to write them.

10. Are you a planner or a spontaneous traveler?

I’m a planner when it comes to nearly everything, including traveling. I love to make schedules so I know well in advanced where we’re going and at what time. I also tend to do a lot of research about the place before I travel there, particularly regarding restaurants due to my nut allergy. It just makes the entire trip so much easier when you know where you’re going ahead of time.

11. Is the glass half full or half empty?

Sometimes I can be a bit of a pessimist (can’t we all?) but I’m going to say half full for this one because it’s what I try to remind myself every day. There are so many reasons to smile, even when you feel blue!

Suspense-10

I’ve decided to include the two themes of this award in my questions: blogging and sunshine!

  1. What’s your biggest source of motivation when it comes to blogging?
  2. What inspires you?
  3. Out of all of your posts, which one is your favorite?
  4. Do you stick to a blogging schedule or do you prefer to post spontaneously?
  5. How did you come up with your blog’s name?
  6. What’s one of your biggest blogging pet peeves?
  7. Any blogging advice?
  8. Do you prefer sunny or rainy days?
  9. Favorite pair of sunglasses?
  10. What’s your ideal way to spend a sunny summer day?
  11. Favorite song with “sun” in the title?

Suspense-11

Blogger Recognition Award: A Look At My Original Blog!

The

The Blogger Recognition Award was originally posted on the blog Edge of Night in order to recognize bloggers that we admire. I’d like to give a big shout-out and thank you to Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense and Safa @ Books Over People for nominating me! Awards like this one never fail to put a smile on my face, and I truly appreciate each and every one for which I’m nominated. I’ve never heard of this award before, which makes this one even more fun!

The Rules:

  • bloggerrecognitionSelect 15 other blogs you want to give the award to. Do some digging if you must! Find those blogs. You cannot nominate yourself or the person who has nominated you.
  • Write a post to show off your award! Give a brief story of how your blog got started, and give a piece or two of advice to new bloggers. Thank whoever nominated you, and provide a link to their blog. List who you’ve nominated in the post.
    • Make sure to also attach the award itself! (You can do this by right-clicking, saving, and uploading the image above).
  • Comment on each blog and let them know you’ve nominated them. Provide a link to the award post you created.
  • Provide a link to the original post on Edge of Night. That way, anyone can find the original guidelines and post if needed, and we can keep it from mutating and becoming confusing!

My Story:

I first started blogging back in eighth grade (five years ago!) with a blog hosted by blogger. It was originally called Me Gusta Leer, because at the time (as I am still currently) I was really into learning Spanish. I basically only posted book reviews and the occasional random discussion post about Spanish or bookish topics, but it was very simple.

Later I wanted to rename my blog, so I came up with the title Nut Free Nerd. I liked its alliteration and the way it encompasses something more about me personally- the fact that I’m allergic to nuts. My original blog titled Nut Free Nerd still exists on the internet, and you can click here if you’d like to check it out. (It’s a tad embarrassing- oh, that awful design!)

nutfreeavatarOn December 9, 2012, I decided to start a new blog with a different blogging platform. I started from scratch on WordPress, and thus, Nut Free Nerd as it exists today was born! As I began to follow more and more blogs, I gradually increased the amount I post as well as the quality of my content. The WordPress platform helped me connect with other book bloggers and made me realize just how wonderful the book blogging community is! My talented brother created the logo I use today (thanks!), and I have now fully embraced my inner blogger. 🙂
