I don’t often participate in read-a-thons, but when I do, it’s usually the Booktubeathon! This year the Booktubeathon has been given a face lift and a new brand: it is now known as the Reading Rush and even has its own website where you can create a profile, add friends, chat on forums, etc. (If you’re participating, add me! My username is nutfreenerd.) This year the Reading Rush is happening from July 22 to July 28, a whole week of glorious reading and fun challenges to complete.
Every year I set a TBR for this read-a-thon to keep track of which books I want to read for each challenge; however, I’m notoriously bad at sticking to TBRs, so we’ll see if this year is any different. I’m really excited about these challenges, though!
1. Read a book with purple on the cover
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. I’ve read a few short stories by Sandra Cisneros, but I’m excited to finally dive into this well-known novel. (And peep the purple shirt on the cover!)
2. Read a book in the same spot the entire time
The Lifted Veil by George Eliot. I’m not quite sure what my one reading spot will be yet. Probably my bed, but maybe I’ll be adventurous and read outside if it’s nice out during the readathon.
3. Read a book that you meant to read last year
Til September Petronella by Jean Rhys. I bought a handful of Penguin Modern editions when I was abroad, and this is the only one of the bunch that I haven’t read yet. These books are perfect for readathons because they are so tiny yet still pack a powerful, thought-provoking punch.
4. Read an author’s first book
Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton. I am so excited to read this book!! One of my best friends recommended it to me at the beginning of the summer and since then so many people have told me how much they love it as well. This is the longest book on my TBR, but I’m hoping that my excitement to read it will power me through.
5. Read a book with a non-human main character
Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis. Okay, so I’m not exactly sure if this book actually has a main character that isn’t human… but don’t the animals in Narnia talk? That counts, right? (It’s been a while since I stepped into the world of Narnia…) I’ve never actually read past the third book of this series, so I’m excited to finally continue on!
6. Read a book that has 5 or more words in the title
Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton. Yup, doubling up on this one!
7. Read and watch a book-to-movie adaptation
Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis. Also doubling up on this one. I’ve never seen a Narnia movie, so I’m excited! Nothing like starting in the middle of a series!
I’m going to be working during the week of the Reading Rush, so I’m not sure how much reading I’ll actually be able to get done. I’m also horrible at sticking to TBRs, so this list will likely change several times over the worse of the week. I have a little stack of other books on my bedside table just in case I want to switch some things up. But I’m actually really excited about this list, so who knows!
